KARIN COLE is the ultimate free-spirit and modern mom. Since moving from New York to California nearly a decade ago, the Cole clan has divided their time between redwood-studded Marin County and wanderlust getaways to Lake Tahoe, Sayulita, Mexico and Refuge Cove, Canada, where Cole summered as a kid with her grandparents, cruising the islands around Vancouver in the summertime on a Chris Craft. “My family ended up buying an old logging camp up there, accessible only by seaplane or boat. It’s super rustic but as my grandmother always used to say: 'It takes effort to have fun.'"
This cluster of ritual spots suits Karin, her two outdoorsy kids –Emerson, 13, and Beckett, 15 – and their Australian Shepherd, Bella, to a tee, but it’s the Marin County home they moved into in May that Cole feels most connected to at the moment. “It’s like a treehouse. Every morning, I wake up to redwood-tops and blue sky. We’ve got the forest-feeling going in the backyard and then this wild sunny, very untamed garden out front.” A vintage 1950s Wedgwood stove keeps the kitchen cozy. Cole’s palette obsession as-of-late – red and turquoise – infuses the woodsy home with a bright, happy vibe. The color scheme, Cole admits, could change on a whim, a habit she picked up working in retail as a VP at West Elm and Williams Sonoma. "My kids are always walking in and going, 'Oh god, mom, are you doing a floor move again?'
Next up? Cole is turning her attention to the back deck, the space she gravitates to for inspiration and time to reflect. “I shop flea markets wherever I go and am constantly picking things up. Right now, I’ve got my eyes out for a string of authentic rodeo lights to hang out back. The porch could use a little sparkle.” See more of Cole's style finds and roam with her wherever she goes.
