AMOEBA MUSIC

Located in the heart of Hollywood since 2001, Amoeba Music holds the title of the world’s largest independent record store. The store is the music equivalent of the Louvre – you could get lost for days flipping through all the vinyl. And the music mecca also hosts killer in-store concerts, with past performers including indie rockers Best Coast and rock ‘n’ roll royalty like Paul McCartney.

RAINBOW
BAR AND GRILL

Since it opened in 1972 (with a party for Elton John), the Rainbow has been the heart of the Sunset Strip’s hard-rock scene. John Lennon, Keith Moon, and Led Zeppelin all frequented this dive, which has also been prominently featured in Guns N’ Roses music videos. And to this day, you can usually find Lemmy from Motorhead playing video trivia at the bar.

9015 Sunset Blvd.

EL REY THEATRE

It was a famed cinema for more than 50 years, but now the El Rey Theatre has become one of L.A.’s premiere concert venues, alongside the Roxy and the Troubadour. The El Rey’s classic neon marquee lights up the Miracle Mile (it was built in 1936), and the 771-capacity club has hosted such rock luminaries as the Pixies and Sonic Youth.

HOLLYWOOD FOREVER

Grim as it may seem, the Hollywood Forever cemetery has hosted some of the best concerts in its Masonic Lodge in recent years, including shows by indie rockers like St. Vincent and Bon Iver. More importantly, the cemetery is the final resting place for both Dee Dee and Johnny Ramone; the latter’s grave features an ornate statue of the punk rocker. And although he’s not dead yet, Morrissey has declared that this is where he wants to end up.

THE VIPER ROOM

This seedy Sunset Strip landmark opened with a bang in 1993, when then-owner Johnny Depp invited Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to be the first band to grace the club’s stage. It’s since been rocked by a variety of performers, from Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen to the White Stripes and the Strokes.

HOLLYWOOD BOWL

One of Los Angeles’ most notable landmarks, the Hollywood Bowl has been the site of a cavalcade of classic concerts. Both The Beatles and The Doors released blockbuster live albums from shows recorded at the Bowl. And in 2012, the Beach Boys played their 50th anniversary show here.

2301 N. Highland Ave.
