GLOSSARY
DENIM
a strong fabric, usually made from cotton and typically blue; used to make jeans, overalls, and other casual clothes
DISTRESSING
a technique that purposefully makes a material look well-worn and not perfect (i.e. a little lucked up)
RAW DENIM
denim in its purest, untreated form. It’s a little stiff at first (aren’t we all?), but softens over time
INDIGO
a dye process from the little green plant responsible for making our jeans blue
SELVEDGE
the woven, finished edge on jeans that keeps the fabric from unraveling, making it more “premium”
RINSE
a literal quick rinse of water to help remove excess dye from jeans
WARP
weft’s best friend; the denim yarn that is weaved vertically that helps create the twill pattern
WEFT
warp’s better half; the denim yarn that is weaved crosswise over and under the warp
WHISKERING
a technique used to create a creased effect on denim for a well-worn look
